Ric is feeling good after he saved Michelle, a heroin addict, from an early death. Ric is trying to rehabilitate her, as he couldn’t do anything for his son Leo. Ric is advising Michelle on a drugs programme and how she can turn her life round by attending the clinic where Leo had worked. Michelle is touched by Ric’s care and says that there’s something about him that reminds him of Leo. Ric looks confused - how does she know about Leo?

Kyla is both excited and scared by her last day at Holby City. She’s still upset by Max rejecting her idea of following him to Rotterdam, but an enthusiastic Donna discussing her leaving party plans means Kyla has no choice other than to remain positive. Meanwhile, Max waits expectantly outside main reception, his face lighting up when Abra appears from the wings.

Sam and his long-lost son, Kieron have been getting to know each other, but Kieron has managed to find time to strike up a blossoming ‘friendship’ with Maria too. Maria tries to clear the air with Sam over the cancer scare misunderstanding but gets the wrong end of the stick again when she mistakenly assumes Sam is moving a mystery - presumably female - friend into his flat.

Maddy finds Linden at Callie’s bedside – it’s clear he’s been there all night. Maddy urges Linden to take a break, she can take over for a while. Maddy can see this is affecting Linden. She sees Linden walking into Phil who hasn’t been able to sleep and needs to explain to Callie’s husband Adrian what is happening. Linden is not sure and asks him to leave. Maddy comes out to intervene and Phil persuades Linden that he wants Adrian to know it’s not what he thinks. Phil heads into see Adrian but it immediately gets tense when Adrian realises who he is and why Linden has let him back in. Linden feels a fool – he’s really got this wrong. Plus the brain stem tests they’ve done aren’t looking good. Maddy witnesses all of this –she has to help Linden sort his head out.

Michelle explains to Ric that she was Leo’s girlfriend. Ric can’t believe what he is hearing. Ric tries to find out about the last few years of Leo’s life. How long had they been together? Michelle doesn’t want to say anything more – why should she? He didn’t care when Leo was alive. What’s he trying to do? Relieve some of his guilt because he didn’t care? He was an absent dad who cared too much about his career. Rachel comes in – he’s needed. Michelle urges him to go – work calls. Ric leaves more confused than ever.

Meanwhile, Kieron turns up at Holby with an injured hand – he has hurt it whilst moving things out of cab. After another apparent rejection by Sam, Maria is pleasantly surprised by the attentions of Kieron. Sam gets a surprise of his own when Elliot reveals that Kieron is in fact a famous violinist due to play to 20,000 people in New York in the New Year - Sam is shocked to learn of his son’s musical talent. Downstairs, in the linen cupboard, Kieron plucks up the courage to kiss Maria for the first time.

Maddy finds Linden looking over Callie’s brain stem results- again and again. Maddy seeks advice about the brain scanner machine. It’s expensive, but she wants to use it for Callie and help Linden. Maddy uses all her powers of persuasion with a bit of flirtation to get the scanner. But Linden will need to sign it off. Linden thinks it’s pointless. But Maddy won’t let it go. Linden reluctantly agrees and Maddy wonders if he’s coming but he doesn’t want to. He’s failed Callie, just like he failed his wife Olivia. He couldn’t save her and he can’t save Callie. Linden has clearly built up a emotional connection to Callie and feels helpless.

Kyla is excited by Abra’s arrival but she struggles with her conscience - she wants to be a good mother and thinks she can’t let Max down by getting distracted… she’s only just got her son back. She rejects Abra’s offer of returning to Ghana with him.

Mark is on holiday leave and he decides to use his time to look after the baby – he’s pretty sure he’s solved Daisha’s immediate childcare problems. Daisha looking at the rota knows Mark’s going to have to go back to work in a few days and she’ll be left looking after the baby. She can’t afford childcare and she can’t have other people looking after her child anymore. Daisha sees no other options, she has to put baby Joe up for adoption.

Ric finishes his meeting and seems distracted. When Michael comments on this Ric admits Michelle is Leo’s girlfriend. Michael reacts and says does this mean that he’s a grandad? Ric looks more confused until Michael tells him about her C-section scar – she’s had a kid. Ric is blown away by the news, he might be a grandad and he didn’t even know. Ric makes a decision- all his other Director of Surgery duties are postponed for the day. He’s dealing with Michelle.

Sam finds Kieron and talk to him about his talent and his forthcoming New York show. Kieron explains that he doesn’t want to do that anymore as the only reason he plays is because of his grandfather. Kerion explains that his grandparents were acting as his parents and the woman he thought was his sister was in fact his mother and that the life he has been leading is one big lie. Kieron reveals he'll give up everything to have a life with Sam in England, but Sam struggles to take it all in and Kieron assumes this means he’s being rejected. Sam says of course he wants to get to know Kieron and have him in his life, but not like this - not if it means Kieron is throwing away his god-given talent

Ric treats Michelle, as he’s not going to give up on her. He asks her if she needs help as he knows she has a child. Michelle is desperate to change her life as losing Leo has been hard. Ric admits that he knows he got it wrong with Leo as he wasn’t there for him. He had four wives and always put his work first but he knows he’s missed out on so much - he wants to change.

Meanwhile, Maddy won’t give up on Callie and Linden. She virtually drags him to the scanning machine but the results aren’t looking good. Though Linden is vindicated, he doesn’t feel good about it. He makes some adjustments as to how they scan the brain activity and they see that she has epilepsy, which could be the problem. Perhaps all isn’t lost - Linden smiles for the first time.

Michelle wishes Ric had talked to Leo like this, as Leo never wanted to end up like he did. Ric and Leo didn’t have a good relationship, but if Ric had made the first move, she’s sure Leo would have been receptive. Michelle feels guilty too as they had an argument and Leo turned back to drugs for comfort. Ric decides to give her some space. However, when he comes back, she has disappeared.

Maria tries to find out what is getting to Sam but he doesn’t want to talk about it. He is clearly confused about what to do. He wants to be with Kieron but he doesn’t want to ruin his son’s future. Sam walks Maria outside and he is clearly upset. She tries to comfort him and they share a romantic kiss.

Both Max and Abra do their best to convince Kyla to go to Africa, but their pleas fail as she’s made up her mind. Abra is devastated. However after talking to Ric and Max, Abra re-evaluates the situation and decides that Kyla is worth the fight. Bowled over by Abra’s emotional plea Kyla sees the light: Max wants her to go, Abra wants her to and even she wants to go- what’s stopping her? Kyla agrees to go back with Abra. Everyone gathers for the party to bid Kyla farewell, safe in the knowledge that she and Abra are doing the right thing and that with both mother and son following their hearts they are both finally getting what they want.
