Holby City
A female Holby City security guard is fighting for her life after a stab attack. Ric is in the thick of an operation as Connie and Michael explain what has happened. She had tried to stop a junkie stealing medical drugs and he stabbed her. Michael and Ric talk about the state of the country and whether the NHS should treat junkies. Ric, Michael and Connie continue to battle to save the life of the security guard on the table. She looks like she might pull through. Meanwhile, Ric is needed down in reception.
A happy Joseph arrives – he wants to whisk Faye off for a romantic break but she doesn’t think it’s the right time with the stabbing having happened. Jac watches, bristling. Joseph and Jac inspect the theatre list – there’s an exciting procedure that they would both like to be a part of. Joseph ignores Jac and he’s been avoiding her since their moment in the cupboard the other day.
Linden clearly has something on his mind and wants to say something to Faye. Faye senses it. Linden stumbles and asks to meet her for coffee the next day. ‘Sure. Better still why don’t you join me for dinner this evening?’ says Faye. Joseph arrives and thanks Linden again for helping him with Faye. Since South Africa , Faye has seen him as a guardian angel.
The press have got wind of the stabbing and want reassuring that Holby is a safe place. Ric is greeted by the press and he tries his best to impress the crowd. He seems to have it all under control until the fiancé of the security guard puts Ric on the spot. Why has he let this happen? Ric is lost for words as Jayne Grayson walks back into work and calmly guides the press through to an organised press conference. It’s clearly generic, CEO speak, but it’s delivered with such confidence that the press are left happy. Ric’s grateful for her return and Jayne wouldn’t have wanted to return to work any other way.
Meanwhile in a tense theatre, Joseph and Jac operate. Jac is distracted and doesn’t feel too good. She puts down her scalpel, apologises and rushes out. Jac is throwing up. A pleased Joseph finishes the job and assumes that Jac has food poisoning until he realises that she might be pregnant. Joseph heads into the locker room where, a very ill Jac is sitting on a bench. The colour drains from his face and Jack notices. He seems unduly concerned about her but she insists that she’s fine. Jac walks out of the room leaving a box on the table next to Joseph. Joseph sees that it is a pregnancy test – his worst nightmare! Joseph quickly puts the box back on the table as Jac returns and grabs it.
Ric meets Carr a new member of the Holby City board – it’s his first day and he has just witnessed Ric’s press performance. They tour the hospital, and talk solutions. Carr has strong views on clamping down on crime – people get away with so much these days. Ric shrugs - a great number of their patients are drunks, junkies and criminals but they’ve got to treat them. Tom meets Carr and explains that the junkie might have been the same one he saw with a knife yesterday. Carr wishes they could take a tougher stance. Tom whole-heartedly agrees.
Linden visits the priest, and asks for forgiveness for how he feels about a girl who is engaged. Linden decides he must be honest and tell her how he feels.
Back on the ward, Joseph tries get more information out of Jac. Being oddly nice to her, Jac responds well as he seems awfully concerned for once. He says that he’s worried that she may be pregnant. She says that she isn’t and that it’s just some dodgy seafood - he has nothing to be worried worry about.
Ric gets on with the day’s patients and one in particular hits a nerve - a clinically obese patient, a smoker returning for more treatment. Ric has a tough conversation – how can he help him if he won’t help himself? Pitiful excuses follow - that it’s expensive to go to the gym, that once a smoker you are always a smoker, and that it’s in this genes. These excuses grate on Ric and he snaps. Until the patient takes action, he’s not going to do anything. He’s sending him home until he can prove that he wants to be helped. The man reckons Ric can’t do this but he just leaves him behind. Tom catches up with Ric – well done – he totally supports Ric.
Linden is now convinced about what he should do with Faye. But he is also dealing with Phil, who says that he has to see Callie. Linden says that it’s a bad idea, but Phil says that after she nearly died, he knows that he wants to be with her. Linden can’t argue, not with what he’s going through.
Ric’s got a new found spring in his step. He feels he’s back taking charge. He meets up with the security guard’s fiancé and says that he’ll be doing everything he can to keep the pressure on the police to find the perpetrator. Ric’s pager goes and the Junkie who committed the crime is back, but in a bad way. Tom and Michael are treating him as he has overdosed and needs treatment. They need to get him to theatre straight away. Somehow the security guard’s fiancé has found out and demands that the junkie should be left to die. Ric promised that the perpetrator would be brought to justice. Michael’s got no time for this, ‘come on Ric, they need to move, call security!’
Linden , supervises as Phil tells Callie what she was going to do that night. He tells her he believes they should be together. But Callie says that’s not how she feels. She doesn’t even know if he’s telling her the truth, she doesn’t remember ringing him and talking about a relationship. More importantly she now realises that she wants to stay with her husband and wants them to be a family. So it would be best if she and Phil never saw each other again. Phil pleads but to no avail. He leaves upset.
Ric is paged, the security guard is in danger of dying but Ric has to finish up where he is. This doesn’t go down too well with the fiancé but Michael takes over as Ric dashes to help the stabbed security guard. There he and Connie fight to save her but she dies. Ric is devastated.
Adrian arrives soon afterwards, and as well as Linden he has to tell Callie what happened that night. He tells Callie that he hit her the night of the accident. Callie later reveals to Linden she already knew this, but she loves Adrian and will stay with him. Later Linden meets Faye. Linden ’s awkward as he wonders if he should declare his feelings to her. He decides not. He tells her he’s feeling a little tired. Faye is disappointed, but says she understands. She wishes him a nice evening.
