Now in its second series, BBC Three British sitcom Cuckoo was looking for a new addition with the death of its titular character played by Andy Samberg back in 2012, and he's come in the form of Dale Jr. - Cuckoo's son - played by Hollywood actor Taylor Lautner.
Recognised for playing the major role of Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga, it came as a shock when he was announced for the role - we hadn't seen much if any comedy from Taylor in the past.
Luckily he's a natural. Delivering line after line about his strange cult (that really isn't a cult - it's the first line of their morning ritual) whilst wearing an awfully scratchy-looking fake beard, his charm and technique pulled viewers in within seconds.
Arriving on the scene and explaining his relation to the family - Chief Ken (Greg Davies), Lorna (Helen Baxendale), Dylan (Tyger Drew-Honey) and his new 'Mom' Rachel (Esther Smith), the chemistry is instantaneous between both he and Rachel, but the fact that she was technically his step-mother at one point is holding her back from making a move, despite getting an eyeful of everything he had to offer in a steamy nude bathroom scene. Lucky girl.
Chief Ken's been asked by wife Lorna to go and get the snip, but when his over-eager and friendly doctor gets a little too close for comfort, he backs out of the plan altogether. It's a storyline that seems to have been recycled in the past and I hope it doesn't continue to play out in the rest of the series. (Though I'm already predicting the inevitable final episode cliffhanger - pregnancy!)
Dale Jr. is convinced that some alien life force is going to fry the rest of humankind with laser beams, and though he could be right, the night he's chosen to be saved is most definitely wrong. Losing faith in everything he's ever been brought up to believe, he thanks the family for their time and ventures off into the world. Luckily for him, and us, the family have really quite taken to him, and invite him to stay with them for the foreseeable future.
With the snip story put aside, this is an ensemble cast that really put on a show. Though there are a couple of jokes that fail to hit the mark at times, the writing is for the most-part impressive and the acting is stellar, and I can't wait to see what happens next as Dale tries to immerse himself into a new way of life.
Cuckoo continues Thursdays, 10pm on BBC Three.
