New research by BT TV claims that the British allow dads of the family to take control of the television on Christmas Day, despite them being the most-likely relative to fall asleep whilst watching their favourite shows.
The study claims that almost a quarter of Brits (23%) have the odds against them when battling for control of the TV, with dad getting there first. However, he's also most likely to go to sleep in front of the TV (39%) followed by mum at 14% and granddad at 10%.
After a hectic day of gifting, eating and celebrations, the first family member dozes off in front of the TV 44 minutes following Christmas dinner.
However it was also revealed that 38% of families are to switch channels before a movie or television show ends, usually because too many people have fallen asleep (41%).
Tradition and democracy is the most popular method of choosing which shows or movies to watch with 22% voting on what they want to watch, just ahead of creatures of habit with 21% who stick to the same shows every year.
64% watch comedy shows and films followed by drama with 47% and action with 29%. With so much choice, Brits on average watch three shows or films and record an additional two.
Nearly half (45%) of the nation tune into live programmes, but a quarter (25%) will watch pre-recorded or on-demand box-sets and films.
Director of content at BT TV, Kate Dean said: "Keeping the whole family entertained is a tough job, but with so much choice at Christmas, there's something for everyone. So don't worry if Dad steals the remote, or the kids get their way, BT TV's new offering has it all rolled into one - with live TV, catch-up, Netflix and more - so you never miss out.
"Agreeing as a family what to watch live seems the best choice, with the option to record the rest and catch up at a later date."
