I'm a huge believer in comedy not being stifled by political correctness or morality. It should be allowed to go to the extremes without fear of consequence, with just a handful of topics out of bounds. Beastiality really should be one of them, but if Ric Flair is willing to put his voice to his character in Camp WWE and allude to having sex with a bear on more than one occasion, that's on him...
Let's rewind a little. Camp WWE is the new animated adult comedy series available exclusively through the WWE Network, featuring a roster of characters familiar to those who are fans of the business. Vince McMahon is the camp CEO, with his daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Triple H junior camp counselors. Ric Flair and Sgt. Slaughter are also camp counselors, with big names such as John Cena, Big Show, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Undertaker amongst those at camp.
Aside from the characters voiced by their real-life counterparts - such as Mr. McMahon and Ric Flair - the voice acting falls a little flat. It could be down to the fact that we see most of these people on a weekly basis and we're used to their regular tones, but how they sound in Camp WWE is just far and away beyond anything that would have been believable, despite them being kids.
There were however some moments of brilliance. The talking McMahon head at the entrance to the camp in the beginning of the episode for instance, which wouldn't allow new campers to enter if they didn't let him finish speaking had me laughing for a good while. There were also times where jokes fell flat and felt a little stale, but on the whole it showed promise.
If Camp WWE is the beginning of the end for the PG Era then I'm all for it. There was a barrage of cursing and adult themes, some of which worked and some of which didn't. This is a show still finding its feet but, throughout the weeks it could go on to become something truly special.
Camp WWE continues exclusively on the WWE Network.
