As Big Brother Canada continues with its groundbreaking tenth season, another heartbreaking eviction took place. Jay Northcott was voted out of the House after failing to pick up the Power of Veto and take themself off the block, so we caught up with the Houseguest to discuss their time in the competition, who they connected with and, what they would change if they could go back and do it all over again.
I know it’s not ideal being second out of the House but you must feel proud to have made it through all of the casting process, and actually getting in there, so congratulations on that! What were your first thoughts when you went in and saw the stunning new design this season?
Thank you so much! It's so beautiful. The first thing you see is all of those doors and I'm still so curious to figure out what the heck is behind all of them! I still have no idea so, that was the first thing. I was like, 'there are so many doors, what could be in store for us this season?'
Do you have any guesses as to what may be behind those doors? We've only seen a handful open so far!
I hope that there's some money behind there for people; I hope there's some really fun powers like Safety, or Automatic HOHs, or sending Marty home! Any of those things would be great.
You said going into the House that you would clash with people who were fake, did you find any of your fellow Houseguests to be fake during your time in there?
Absolutely! I kind of came into the House in like a very, I think maybe naive mindset that like, people would want to connect and these kind of conversations. Then, slowly but surely I found, especially that I had no idea that me and Marty weren't connecting in the way that we needed to and, he put me up on the block and I found that kinda surprising from a lot of the conversations we had throughout the week.
Can you talk to us a little bit about your relationship with Kyle in the House?
Me and Kyle are very different people, we come from very different places. I think he's an amazing human and a very great person. We just see differently.
He was with an alliance with the person who put me up on the block so, there was a lot of tension in that and tension runs high in that house.
I told him right to his face that I was gonna go after him if I stayed this week and, I think anybody would want to get me out after that.
Despite this, Kyle did actually vote to save you in the end, along with Hermon. Why do you think the two of them voted to keep you in the House?
I got them because they're trying to be sneaky little buggers! They were trying to put it on Jess and Josh I think, to put targets on their back. I've never seen that work on a Big Brother season ever, it usually comes back to bite you so, I hope it bites them pretty hard.
Your speech was really powerful and I hope you’re proud of it! Why did you decide to dedicate it to causes close to your heart rather than the game?
I think that I did a lot of the work that I needed to in the House to stay that week and, I did all the work that I could and, I knew for a fact that anytime I had a platform like Big Brother or anything like that, to have these conversations about missing and murdered indigenous women; what's happened in residential schools; what reconciliation and land back looks like in Canada. If I have that platform, I would really like to make sure that these things are not forgotten and that reconciliation in Canada is not over and we still have a lot of work to do.
Hindsight is 20/20! Looking back at your game, are there any moments that really stick out for you where you wish you’d done something different?
I really wish I had better hand-eye coordination to hold up a cake and put it on a platform, because when that one fell, I think I'll have nightmares forever!
And I guess, I think if I would've connected to Hermon a little bit more in the first week, I think I would've been a part of the alliances a little bit more.
Social media is always a big part of any season of Big Brother Canada, so are you looking forward to seeing the perception of how you played in the House by fans?
Yeah! Let's see how it goes. I always say there are two sides of Jay a lot of the time. There is sweet, nice, living in joy and happiness. Also, I'm from a trailer park in small town Alberta, like, don't mess with me sometimes! You have to see that those two sides live in me and, I'm stoked that I got to be there. I hope that people enjoyed my time in the House.
Big Brother Canada is known for its twists, so if there was a way in which you could get back into the House and compete again, is that an opportunity you would take? Who would you be coming for if you did make it back into the House?
Oh my gosh, I would run! I would be like, bucking it there. I really, really think that Kyle is playing the best game, it's probably gonna bite him in the butt because he's playing very fast, very quick kinda like I did and people might come after him really soon. But, as Arisa told me yesterday, he won frickin' HOH so it won't happen this week, but it'll happen next week.
Who do you think is in danger now that you know he's got HOH?
I really hope it's not Josh and Jess. They are the most lovely humans in the entire world and I'm so privileged to have been able to have conversations and chat with them and really create a beautiful friendship with both of them, but I think they might be on the chopping block this week.
I know it's super early but did anybody in the House show you they have what it takes to go all of the way and win this game?
I really think that Josh has it, to go all the way, if he just keeps his connections with all the other people that he has in the House, keeps his mind nice and level; I would love to see him go all the way.
