Comic Relief is set to take over our screens tonight and while we’ve looking forward to another evening of people doing something funny for money, we’ve looked through our enormous VHS collections and sought out our favourite Red Nose Day sketches.
Smithy Meets The England Team
Anyone who’s a fan of the football will have wanted to do this, get in a room with the England team and give them a good yelling at. That we got to see James Cordon’s fantastic comic creation Smithy have a go at it made it all the sweeter.
From fist bumping with David Beckham to the hilarious embrace with Rio Ferdinand, this was the finest of Smithy and the reason why we all wanted another series of Gavin and Stacey.
Ali G Meets Posh and Becks
When Ali G was done right, we all remember why Sasha Baron Cohen was labelled a comedic genius and given the keys to the kingdom. There is no greater example of his creation at work than this interview, where he makes the couple squirm in the most grin-inducing way possible.
Tony Blair and Catherine Tate
When we heard that one-woman catchphrase machine Catherine Tate and Prime Minister Tony Blair were going to be teaming up for a sketch, we thought it might just be one of the most awkward things ever. Thankfully, we were proved massively wrong, as this is still one of the funniest things from the 25 years of the show.
The best thing of all is that while we were just waiting for Tony to embarrass himself and look like a bit of an oaf, we actually pulled of Tate’s catchphrases with real aplomb, showing that it’s not just in parliament where he can deliver lines with expert timing.
For all his massive flaws, we don’t think David Cameron could do half as good a job with it.
Match Of The Cultural Day
An oldie, but a goody, as in this brief little skit we get to see a whole new side to Des Lynam as he finally gets sick and tired of looking over clips of football and wants to do something new. The entire show gets stolen by Jimmy Hill though, who’s wonderful, rambling dream discussion is utterly hilarious.
Short, sharp, and with a brilliant punchline, it’s the sort of great little aside that makes Red Nose Day what it is.
The Office The Opera
Ricky Gervais is at his best when he’s playing up the egotistical maniac card. No sketch does that better than this modern classic, which turn Gervais from the usual common-or-garden narcissist and pumps him up to the level of villain that usually comes along twirling a moustache and planning what next to do with Mr Bond.
Mr Bean On Blind Date
We miss Blind Date. No matter how much Paddy McGuinness tries, he’ll never be Cilla Black and Take Me Out will never replicate the warm, cuddly Saturday evening feel of Blind Date. Now add in the comic whirlwind that is Rowan Atkinson, and the rest writes itself.
