Rebecca Hall In Parades End

Rebecca Hall In Parades End

The biggest awards ceremony in British TV takes place tomorrow night, with the best and brightest of the small screen getting dressed to the nines and heading to London’s Royal Festival Hall.

They’ll all be there to see who gets awarded the biggest prizes in British TV, the famous masks the will immediately become the pride and joy of the recipient’s collections.

Before the envelopes are opening and the gushing speeches are read out, I’ve cast my eyes over the nominations and given my thoughts on who I think the judges will plum for when it comes to decision time in the performance categories.

Leading Actor

Ben Whishaw’s Richard II was brilliant and Dereck Jacobi was an utter delight in Last Tango In Halifax, this is a scrap between Sean Bean and Toby Jones. While this is a close one to call, I’m going to put my money on Jones, as despite The Girl’s many faults, Jones’ performance was incredible throughout.

Leading Actress

This year’s set of actresses really did all put in fantastic performances, and in any other year could all win the award. But as her career on the big screen continues to lift off, Rebecca Hall’s brilliant performance in Parade’s End looks the favourite to win and will see her walking off with her second TV Bafta from as many nominations.

Supporting Actor

Simon Russell Beale has been delighting audiences on stage for years with his Shakespearean performances and was finally able to bring that to the screen with his astounding performance in The Hollow Crown. Whilst the three other nominees are fantastic actors, if Beale doesn’t take home the trophy, there will be some very shocked faces in the audience.

Supporting Actress

As much as I love Imelda Staunton, this has Olivia Colaman written all over it. She’s the darling of both audience and critics at the minute, with exceptional reason. Over the last three years she developed into a truly formidable actress, a match for absolutely anyone on the big or small screen.

Female Performance In A Comedy

This is a straight duel between Jessica Hynes and Olivia Colman, both of whom were fantastic in Twenty Twelve. On this occasion though, Hynes looks as if she’s going to be the one who comes out on top, after coming out on top at the Royal Television Society Awards earlier this year.

Male Performance In A Comedy

This is a tough decision as to who Bafta will side with. The panel have always shown love towards Steve Coogan and his monstrous creation Alan Partridge, but they’ve also nominated Peter Capaldi four times for his bracing performances in The Thick Of It. With the latter coming to an end this year and Capaldi finally putting away the swear jar for good, the pendulum seems to swinging towards Capaldi, although I wouldn’t be surprised if either of them wins.

Entertainment Performance

While it always seems slightly dodgy to me that the host of the evening is also up for an award, Graham Norton is going for a third win on the bounce and it’s hard to see him not get the hat trick. I feel not even the collective might of Ant and Dec can stop Norton from adding another mask to his collection.

Who do you think will win? Let us know in the comments and make sure to check out our second set of Bafta predictions, to find out which programmes we think will take home the awards.
