Ahead of the premiere of the new series of Celebrity Karaoke Club, we caught up with internationally-renowned drag queen and RuPaul's Drag Race UK legend A'Whora, to chat all about her time on the show as well as exactly what she's been up to since being catapulted into the spotlight...
First off, how are you doing? It's been a wild couple of years for everybody, so how are things?
I’m doing great, currently touring the world putting myself out there internationally on sold out tours! It’s a dream come true to be honest; exhausting but so exciting! Booked and blessed, I can’t complain!
I feel so honoured to be on such an iconic season [of RuPaul's Drag Race UK] that is still the talk now! A cast of such talented, well-rounded and diverse queens; it’s been amazing over the last year to see everyone thrive and succeed in their field and the same for myself!
I’ve done more than I could have ever imagined and it feels insane to look back and see how far I’ve come since walking in as Dorothy!
Have you been up to anything exciting in the past few weeks that you can share some details about?
I’ve been touring across the UK, Australia, then America and now currently Canada! It’s been a long six months away from home but it's been such a dream to travel the world and meet fans in so many places I never thought possible! It’s been so surreal since the pandemic to now finally be able to travel.
Celebrity Karaoke Club is back for a third series and you are set to star! What can you tell us about the experience you had on the show?
It’s messy, it’s chaotic, lots of twists and turns! So many icons and famous faces come to visit but most importantly it’s a huge laugh, full of love! So what more could you ask for?
Who were some of your favourite fellow contestants to kick back and have some fun with on the show?
I became really close with Donna Preston, me and her just had the same energy of not taking it too serious but also being 100% delusional! Donna is basically a drag queen at heart, so me!
Should we expect any drama from the series, or is it all a good time?
That’s for me to know and for you to find out baby! But I can assure you I am the drama, have you not seen Drag Race?! Haha.
Let’s talk about Drag Race! You seem like the perfect contender to come back for an All Stars season - would that be something you’d be interested in?
Of course, I’d always love to go back and see/meet so many of the girls again but right now it’s just not for me at this moment. I’m so focused and busy in other places and still riding off of the success of our season that right now it would be stupid for me to go back so soon, give it a little more time and maybe we will see! But of course never say never.
Who would you like to see join you if you did do All Stars?
I’d love to see Divina, Crystal, Tia Kofi, Ginny Lemon, Kitty Scott Claus and Choriza May! Those are some of my faves from each UK season so I think would make for a fabulous cast!
We have three questions we’re asking everyone we chat to for Female First! The first is, which women in your life do you admire that have shaped you?
My mum and my nan! They were always the ones who raised me to become who I am, I’ve always been surrounded by very independent females growing up and strong ones at that! So having both of them carry such a strong influence on who I am today has been a blessing.
Secondly, who have been some of your favourite women to work with in your career so far?
Little Mix was definitely a highlight! They were so genuine and honest and literally became such good friends from working together; who’d have thought I’d be getting texts from Jade [Thirlwall]?
Finally, what does the idea of ‘woman’ mean to you?
I think it’s ever-changing the more I learn, there’s no specific idea to women, and if there was then we would be taking 20 steps back! Women for me is everything, and it’s still growing and becoming so much more each day! The one thing I hope that women always have is freedom, that’s all I have to say on that!
Celebrity Karaoke Club starts tonight Monday 6th June, 22:35pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
