NOTE: Spoilers
So, that's it. We have our new Supreme and the Coven is brimming with fresh talent and new faces. Pitchforks at the ready... I thoroughly enjoyed this season.
Though it's been met with criticism for being messy and not explaining enough at times, I do believe that throughout there was enough detail given for each and every character, plot and scene.
We opened with a three minute Stevie Nicks performance of Fleetwood Mac's 'Seven Wonders', where she danced around the Coven's home as the witches prepared to prove themselves through performing the Seven Wonders.
It really geared me up for the episode, and as she wished everyone luck, a single shiver went down my spine. This would be the moment we've all been waiting for over 12 previous episodes.
Myrtle and Cordelia announced that this would be the first time that a Coven would compete to be named the next Supreme, and so in breaking tradition, they'd complete them in a random order compared to the usual easiest to most difficult.
Telekinesis was the first challenge, and as all of the girls - Misty, Queenie, Madison and Zoe managed to successfully perform the wonder, moving on to Concilium.
As the competitors for supremecy controlled one another's minds, Zoe and Madison made Kyle a part of their mind games against one another. Madison made Kyle kiss her then lick her boot, so Zoe commanded he come over and make out with her, all while giving Madison an evil glare. This didn't go down well, as Madison clenched her first and Kyle began to throttle Zoe, only being stopped when Cordelia flung him to the other side of the room.
Once again all four came out of it with positive results, but it was perhaps their most dangerous test that was to follow: Vitalum Vitalis.
The girls had to go to their own personal Hells and back again - perhaps a more sinister version of The Hobbit - and it was at this point we discovered that Misty was probably the most deserving of the Supreme title. So, naturally, she had to die.
As we were shown her fate on a loop - having to dissect a live frog before bringing it back to life in school, as the teacher threatened her and schoolmate's teased - everybody else managed to return in one piece as Misty Day's body disappeared forever. Cordelia let out a howl of disappointment, the tears flowed and I felt as if someone had twisted the knife - the witch who arguably did nothing wrong for an entire season was punished.
Getting back to the task at hand, Transmutation Tag was the order of the day to bring some light back into the young female's life, and as they shifted behind one another, finally laughing, they were brought crashing back down to Earth when Zoe transmutated on top of the gate - impaling herself and bringing her life to a swift end.
Luckily for her, the act of resurrection - Vitalum Vitalis - is next on the cards, but as Queenie fails to bring her back from the land of the dead, Madison refuses to attempt the act on Zoe, instead killing a fly and bringing it back to life. "Crown me" she demands before storming off, and Myrtle's worried that another Fiona-esque Supreme is on the cards, and so persuades Cordelia to start taking part in the Seven Wonders trials.
A glimmer of hope is given to the witch who's been running Robichaux Academy for some time now, and so she proves herself throughout the trials the other girls have already performed, and then comes Pyrokinesis which seems easy enough for both herself and Madison.
With just Divination left on the cards, Cordelia successfully locates an item left behind by a predecessor, and Madison storms off to pack her things and leave the Coven once and for all after proving she doesn't have what it takes to step into the power role.
Unluckily for her, Kyle follows, angered that his love's life wasn't spared, and strangles the life out of Madison before Spalding appears, offering to help him get rid of the young witch's body.
With it being decided that Cordelia is the next Supreme, she brings Zoe back from the dead and has a major plan to make sure their kind never go extinct.
Inviting in members of the media and press, she sits down for television interviews in which she explains exactly what a witch is, that they are born a witch and invites any girl out there who thinks she may be a witch to come forward, telephone, email or turn up on the doorstep, as they'll provide a home for them.
Myrtle then makes the ultimate sacrifice in an emotional scene - she demands that Cordelia burn her at the stake because of her murdering of the past Council members - and although 'Delia doesn't want to do it because Myrtle's been her "true mother", she understands that she must start in her role as Supreme with a clean slate.
As she burns, the Supreme and new Council members - Zoe and Queenie return to the manor, but Cordelia has one more problem to deal with.
Leaving the girls for a moment, she finds her mother is actually alive and has been planning to take out the next Supreme all along, and when Fiona reveals herself we realise that she's on the verge of death.
She lets Cordelia in on how she planted a fake memory in the head of the Axeman. "I knew you'd deal with him for me" she mutters, and as the pair exchange words, some bitter, some emotional, we're left on tenterhooks to see if Fiona has it in her to kill her own daughter.
It's at this moment we're finally shown her vulnerability. She actually does love her daughter, but rejected her for most of her life because she constantly reminded her that she would one day die. As her life slips away while she embraces her daughter one last time, her body slumps, but she is elsewhere.
We're shown Fiona's Hell. She's in a farmhouse that stinks of fish, stuck for eternity with the Axeman - a man she actually despised - and all she wants is her daughter. Fiona loved her really - she just always loved herself that little bit more, right up until her final moments.
Back to the Coven, and the doors are opening for the new witches to be inducted. "Where's the Supreme?" one budding witch asks. "You're looking at her." replies Queenie, leaving Cordelia with a smile on her face, and us feeling all fuzzy and warm inside.
It was for me the most satisfying ending to a season of American Horror Story yet. The twist was believable and while not everybody survived, we finally got an ending where the main protaganists were allowed to live on as they had always hoped.
With Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett signed on for at least another season, we cannot wait to see what Ryan Murphy's got up his sleeves for season four. October cannot come soon enough!
