Which destinations are your favourite?
Wanderlust Magazine, the bible for adventurous travellers, has named its Best 50 Trips for travel next year including holidays to Iraq, Southern Sudan and North Korea
Research for the list involved the editorial team trawling through literally 100’s of the newest holidays for next year and drilling them down, in their opinion, to the top fifty.
New frontiers uncovered include pioneering trips to Iraq, Southern Sudan and even North Korea, really taking visitors off the beaten track. In addition we see new ways of enjoying tried and tested favourites such as archaeology diving expeditions to Japan, wildlife treks in Scotland and ‘learn to climb’ holidays in France and Italy.
Lyn Hughes, editor in chief at Wanderlust, says: “Who would have thought a few years ago Iraq would be on the list of new destinations, or Burma for that matter? Each year the world opens up even more to travellers and we’ll be watching with interest to see any more places offered over the next 12 months."
The research uncovered some definite trends for 2013 travel. New Travel Frontiers making a name for themselves in the list include:
Iraq – it’s now possible to explore the safe bits on Wild Frontier’s Iraqi Kurdistan Traveller where you will explore the safe northern Kurdish region on what will be one of the first trips into this misunderstood section of the Middle East.
South Sudan – be one of the first to explore one of the world’s newest countries on the South Sudan tour from Undiscovered Destinations. Explore the capital, Juba and safari in Boma National Park where the wildlife thought to have vanished during the civil war, is returning in droves with migration numbers to rival the Serengeti.
Albania – pull on your walking boots for The Mysterious South trek with Walks Worldwide through this little known country. Peak baggers can drink in the views from Mount Cika’s Kore summit of 2005m.
Burma - the country continues to be big news with an ever growing choice of ways to explore the country. Three new trips have made it into the top 50 final list including an overland adventure with Dragoman incorporating China, Burma and Thailand and a biking trip from Exodus – Burma by Bike, which enables you to fully appreciate the Shan Highlands, the central plains and the descent from Mt Popa at a slower pace.
Lyn added: “We have seen a massive rise in the choice of cycling holidays this year; it’s the perfect way to really explore a country and soak up the atmosphere at a more sedate pace in really intriguing destinations such as the Baltic States where you can traverse Lahemaa, Estonia’s first national park, or spy on winged wonders at the Curonian Lagoon.
"And my favourite find for next year must be Colombia. Well known names seem to be flocking there at the moment and it’s at that really exciting stage of being relatively undiscovered but already has some gorgeous places to stay.”
