Bon Voyage found that only 6% of Brits know what the Seven Wonders of the World are. Only 21% could name two and a huge 61% could only name one! Many disagreed what the seven wonder should be naming the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon as attractions that should be added to the list.
The correct seven wonders are:
Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt
Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Iraq
Statue of Zeus at Olympia in Greece
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus in Turkey
Colossus of Rhodes in Greece
Lighthouse of Alexandra in Egypt
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Turkey
People’s excuses ranged from forgetting because they have been taught them at school, 43% and 76% simply said that they found the subject boring and therefore had not bothered to learn them.
In response to this finding, bonvoyage.co.uk decided to ask the respondents to list which famous sights around the world they would most like to visit and see listed as the new ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. The top answers listed were as follows:
- Statue of Liberty (America) (46%)
- Grand Canyon (America) (42%)
- Northern Lights (Polar Regions- Scandinavia, Greenland, Canada etc)(37%)
- Great Barrier Reef (Australia) (33%)
- Table Mountain (South Africa) (26%)
- Mount Vesuvius (Italy) (21%)
- Niagara Falls (Canada) (17%)
Steph Curtin, Cruise Development Manager at bonvoyage.co.uk, said the following on the subject of the results:
“After discovering the lack of knowledge and awareness amongst the general public regarding the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, the team here felt compelled to investigate what landmarks are now highly coveted as modern day wonders of the world.”
She continued:
“The collated list produced some great results, such as the Statue of Liberty and Great Barrier Reef, but also a couple that we weren’t expecting, including The Northern Lights and Mount Vesuvius. What’s great is that good deals on cruises can enable people to see a lot of these fantastic places, so people should start exploring now!”
