Two Fifths of Brits Shun Staycation Holidays

It’s safe to say that 2013 hasn’t got off to a great start for British weather, with freezing temperatures still present in April, with that in mind, along with the fact that the 2012 UK summer was also a disappointment; four in ten British holidaymakers will be flying abroad for their annual summer vacation.

Findings also suggest that although the recession is biting, the need for time away is greater than ever as some are prepared to go into the red to hold on to their summer holiday,  with a quarter saying they would rather go into debt than miss their summer break altogether.

We expect a rise in demand for overseas holidays; the UK may have fallen back down the pecking order especially now there is no Olympics.

Arena Media surveyed 1000 UK active holidaymakers who were asked about their travels last year, their holiday intentions this year and their motivations and attitudes towards this year’s holiday plans.

The research also found that almost half of the holidaymakers surveyed will be dipping into their savings to afford a holiday in 2013.

Martin Greenbank, Head of Intelligence at Arena Media, said: “We expect a rise in demand for overseas holidays; the UK may have fallen back down the pecking order especially now there is no Olympics.

“This might also mean an early surge for the overseas holiday, then a late market for the UK as supply is of course limited.

“The financial reality of 2013 Britain means an accelerating of the move towards short breaks. This is good news for travel companies who offer the ABTA/ATOL protection to bookings as people put more emphasis on the safety of their booking.

“The findings also suggest a great interrogation of the travel decision as the holidays become more valued (Change is always good news for Google).”
