Whilst Britons appear to be incredibly money-savvy when it comes to bagging a holiday bargain, this financial acumen may not extend as far as spending habits when actually on holiday.
And what is it that makes us spend the big bucks while away? Maybe as no surprise at all, a new study by the UK’s largest discount website revealed alcohol is one of the bisggest spend for Britons on holiday, with the average British holidaymaker splashing £300 on alcohol alone, on a week-long trip abroad.
It’s obviously important to not only drink responsibly, but drink within your budget. The costs can easily spiral out of your control, so make sure you’re sensible and plan ahead with your spending...
The study, by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, polled 1,512 men and women aged 18 and over from around the UK, all of whom had been on a week-long holiday abroad last Summer.
When it came to alcohol, 79 per cent of respondents said yes to drinking on holiday and 55 per cent admitted that they drank alcohol for six out of the seven days that they were on holiday.
These respondents were also asked to estimate how much money, on average, they spent on alcohol per day whilst abroad last year. When taking all responses into account, the average amount spent on alcohol per day by respondents was ‘£49.92’. The average Briton therefore spent £299.52 on alcohol alone during a week-long trip abroad, last year.
Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “Alcohol and summer holidays seem to go hand in hand for Britons, and to see that we spend so much as a nation on booze alone was quite surprising.
“It’s evidently the norm to drink almost every day on holiday abroad, but when you look at how the costs stack up many Britons might think twice about how much they’re knocking back this year.”
Furthermore, more than half of those who drank on their summer holiday abroad last year claimed that they drank ‘to excess’ each time they consumed alcohol, with three quarters confessing they drink more on holiday than they do at home.
The poll also found that 61 per cent of British holidaymakers claim to drink a ‘wider variety’ of alcohol abroad than they would at home; whilst 81 per cent admitted that they happily spent more on alcohol abroad than they would at home.
Alcohol spend is rarely considered when planning a holiday as 45 per cent said they didn’t really think about it beforehand. A further 13 per cent of respondents admitted that the amount they’d spent on alcohol had forced them into debt post-holiday last year.
Mark added: “It’s obviously important to not only drink responsibly, but drink within your budget! The costs can easily spiral out of your control, so make sure you’re sensible and plan ahead with your spending money before you go mad ordering in a bar!”
