As Easter draws ever nearer, research conducted by holiday lettings agency HolidayCottages.co.uk reveals a family of four could save up to 81 per cent this year, by holidaying at home over the Easter period.
Well recognised as a peak time for family travel, many tour operators and hoteliers hike up the costs of holidays over Easter and with the pound weak against the Euro; seven per cent lower than back in January, Brits are paying premium prices for packed resorts.
Not only could holidays in the UK save families staggering amounts of money, but also avoid the inevitable stress and rows of overseas travel, as airports and beach resorts become saturated with holidaymakers.
James Morris, Managing Director at HolidayCottages.co.uk said: “Our research shows Brits really can save significant amounts of money by exploring the best of the British rather than heading abroad.
“The South West is one of many thriving holiday hot spots across the UK and recently featured in Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Top 25 Beaches in Europe, with Rhossili Bay in South Wales named third and beaches in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall all ranking highly.”
The research compared the costs of a family holiday in several popular short haul destinations with the costs of a holiday in the popular South West of England; departing from various UK airports and cities during the Easter break.
Findings show that contrary to popular belief, ‘staycations’ can cost British families, just a fraction of the price of a holiday abroad and in some cases cost just a fifth of the price, with those leaving Birmingham saving more than £2200 by enjoying the beaches in Cornwall not the Canaries.
Those in the north can save a whopping £1500 by heading south, rather than abroad; meaning a family of four could take three holidays in the UK for the same price as one in Morocco.
Holidaymakers from London, which is serviced by many airports with low cost flights, will save 46 per cent by heading to the beautiful British beaches and countryside rather than jetting off to join the crowds in the Costas.
