If the indicator for romance is the amount you spend on a Valentine’s trip, then Brits can proudly wear their ‘least romantic in Europe’ crown for another year.
Those Britons who are lucky in love are planning to spend less on a Valentine’s Day break for two, than they did in 2012, with the average Brit willing to part with just £131 for a romantic getaway, according to new figures from lastminute.com.
The online hotel, travel and leisure specialist, found that putting us Brits to shame are the Germans who take the top spot as Europe’s most romantic country, spending on average £214 on Valentine’s breaks this year, even knocking the 'zut alors' out of the French who slip back into second place, spending £183 on average for a love-filled escape.
According to lastminute.com’s booking data, Brits are also one of the least organised nations when it comes to planning and booking a romantic trip, preferring to be a little more spontaneous and leaving it until six days before the big day to finalise all their plans.
Mark Maddock of lastminute.com UK and Ireland, said: “This Valentine’s Day British couples have proved that, despite tightened purse strings, spontaneity and an element of surprise helps to keep romance alive.”
Once again the Germans reign supreme, showing their devotion to love by booking a Valentine’s break 23 days in advance; and the French come in second place booking nine days before the big day.
