An online flight company has found that a shocking 80 per cent of us return to the same place every summer, rather than exploring somewhere new.

Cheapflights.co.uk also found that 40 per cent even return to the same resort or hotel after polling over 1,000 people from the UK.

The top reasons for returning were ‘price’ and ‘good weather’, with ‘ease of travel’ and ‘peace of mind’ also playing a factor.

Unsurprisingly, the top places were within the UK, the US and Spain - but with more men opting for the US and women opting for the Spain. The study found that a raise in price or a bad experience would most likely to stop us returning.

Britons named Australia, New York, Hawaii, the Maldives and California the top destinations that would break holiday habits, but with price being such a big factor, habits are unlikely to change any time soon.

Chartered Psychologist, Dr Jane McCartney said: “You may not be able to afford the most exotic holiday destination, but play with your options. Perhaps try to explore options in a different way. Challenge your partner to help you research destinations and beat your price.”

Cheapflights.co.uk travel expert, Oonagh Shiel, said: “If you’re a little too familiar with that balcony view – or you’ve been on first name terms with your holiday waiter for a few years now, perhaps it’s time to give each other a break and look at some other options – and swap your destination déjà vu for something new.”

Advising on some of the best places, Oonagh said: “For a bargain, check out Croatia before it enters the EU, affordable Lithuania or, for a real spectacle, the Northern Lights in Iceland, which is tipped to be close to its best this year.

"If you want to push the boat out and go further afield you can always go Gangnam Style to Korea – or check out Myanmar ahead of the crowd.”
