Research by an online travel agency has revealed that the number one causing factor for the choice of holiday dates in 2012 was ‘sporting events’ such as major football matches and the London Olympics.
Sunshine.co.uk polled over 1,400 adults from th UK to see if they had booked their trips around cetain events to avoid a clash. Of the 1,170 that said yes, over a half of them listed sports as the key reason, closely followed by birthdays and weddings events.
It may be an indication of the growing digital culture that over a fifth of respondents avoided holidaying because of the release of a new video game.
It also appears that work is something that doesn’t hold us back from jetting off, as only 4 per cent considered their job as a reason to affect their choice of dates.
It also appears that many are doing the opposite with 57 per cent admitting to timing their holidays to miss events at home, with the majority of reasons being work related.
Chris Clarkson, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: “It’s inevitable that, when booking a holiday, you’re going to make sure you plan it for dates when you’re not going to miss out on something back home, like an anniversary or birthday.
"However, I’m sure there are some people who really like the idea of being on holiday on their birthday or to celebrate their anniversary; the idea certainly appeals to me.
“Then, there are the sneaky few who book holidays to avoid something back home, as we saw from our poll. I must say, making sure you’re not here when something big or unpleasant is happening at work is very clever, but not very responsible.”
