Noisy kids are the number one annoying in-flight issue

Many UK holidaymakers have specific irks when it comes to travelling abroad by plane, according to search statistics by a leading online independent travel agency. A recent poll has revealed that ‘noisy children’ are the top annoyance on flights abroad in the eyes of Britons going away on holiday.

www.sunshine.co.uk carried out the study as part of ongoing research into the holiday preferences and experiences of people around the UK. 1,648 UK-based adults took part in the poll and all respondents had been abroad on holiday in the past 12 months via a flight.

When asked ‘Which of the following scenarios annoy you the most during a flight, when going on holiday?’ and asked to select all that applied from a list a possible answers. The results according to the poll by sunshine.co.uk were as follows:

1. Noisy children - 88%

“I think passengers need to be considerate of those travelling on the same flight as them, so a thing like not letting your kids run up and down the aisle is an obvious one

2. Lack of leg room  - 76%

3. Poor quality food/choice - 52%

4. Not getting seated with co-travellers - 49%

5. Passengers kicking backs of chairs - 41%

6. Loud fellow passengers - 35%

7. Drunken fellow passengers - 23%

8. Small toilets - 17%

9. Rude in-flight crew - 11%

10. No in-flight entertainment - 9%

When asked if they enjoyed flying, just 23 per cent of those taking part said ‘yes’, whilst 35 per cent claimed to be ‘indifferent’ and 14 per cent stated they were scared of flying.

All respondents were asked if they had ever made a complaint about any aspect of their flight experience on a previous holiday abroad, to which a fifth said that they had. When asked what the cause of their complaint had been, ‘noisy children’ was again the top answer given.

Chris Clarkson, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: “As a father with young children, I know it can be tough as a parent to keep little ones entertained during a flight. When I’ve travelled without my children, I’ve often been on a flight with loud kids, but rather than getting annoyed I tend to just feel sorry for the mum and dad!

“I think passengers need to be considerate of those travelling on the same flight as them, so a thing like not letting your kids run up and down the aisle is an obvious one. However, there are unfortunately other things that do a great job of irritating passengers and lack of leg room is one I think we’ve all experienced!” he said.
