Covent Garden is the West End’s most magical destination at Christmas. The neighbourhood’s 60 foot tree shimmers with 50,000 red LED lights and the Market Building glows with mirror balls turning in the vaulted ceilings.
The pedestrianised cobbles are ideal for strolling and soaking up the festive atmosphere picking up treats from the Real Food Market or taking time to pat the live reindeer in residence each Saturday on the Piazza.
In addition to the traditional loveliness that is a Covent Garden Christmas, the area will be hosting a brand new event this year and teaming up with LEGO to create the first advent calendar made entirely of bricks. The advent calendar will launch on the December 1st and each day at 4pm a door will open to reveal a bespoke LEGO surprise in the run up to Christmas. Also new for this year the shopping streets of Russell Street, James Street, King Street and Henrietta Street will be adorned with a glittering lights display which includes over 150,000 pea lights leading the way to the Piazza.
It all starts on the November 7th when the lights are switched on and the famous London Gay Men’s Chorus will serenade visitors with its traditional and not so traditional tunes. With all the activity alongside some of the best restaurants in the West End and fantastic market stalls, coming to Covent Garden is the perfect day out this Christmas.
Bev Churchill, Covent Garden Brand Director, said: “Covent Garden is truly magical at Christmas with its fantastic atmosphere and ‘ahh’ factor. We invite Londoners and visitors to come to the area to enjoy all it has to offer this festive season.”
Entertainment across the season in Covent Garden includes:
- London Gay Men’s Chorus Performances:
Maintaining the seasonal cheer from launch night and every Saturday from 10th November, the London Gay Men’s Chorus will delight Christmas shoppers with a medley of traditional and not-so-traditional festive tunes.
- Reindeer Petting:
A family favourite, the live Reindeer petting will return to the Covent Garden Piazza every Saturday from 10th November between 12pm - 4pm, providing the chance to hand feed the reindeer and to enjoy a perfect Christmas photo moment.
- Topiary Reindeer:
Making a popular return to the neighbourhood, Covent Garden’s classic 30 foot topiary reindeer will this year be protected from the elements with a cosy Lyle & Scott beanie, as he takes up residence on the North Piazza.
- Covent Garden Christmas Food Market:
The award-winning Covent Garden Real Food Market will receive a Christmas makeover and move to the North Piazza. The market will be open every Thursday from 11am-7pm, selling foodie treats.
