When asked about the items we carry in our beach bags and their value, the poll shows the average cost of a beach bag amounts to hundreds of pounds per person.
Over 50 per cent of holidaymakers carry money to the beach or pool and over 46 per cent take their mobile phone, while 40 per cent take their digital camera. Other popular beach bag items include watches and even passports, with many people opting to carry them with them rather than place them in the hotel safe.
With many holidaymakers leaving their highly priced valuables unguarded on the beach or hidden under towels, we are urging travellers to carefully check their travel insurance policies..."
Over a third of people said they don’t trust their hotel safe, though 22 per cent of people admit they go for the Ostrich approach and hide their items under a towel or sunlounger when they head for a dip in the water.
One in ten holidaymakers has had something stolen when at the beach or pool, and yet only a fifth of travellers would use a locker to keep their valuables safe.
Paula Cottrell, Head of Travel Insurance at Post Office Ltd, said: “Our love for gadgets knows no bounds as we even take our technology down to the beach or pool with us. As a result, we’re seeing the cost of the average beach bag increasing in value to over £600 with contents including expensive ‘must haves’ such as mobile phones and digital cameras.
“With many holidaymakers leaving their highly priced valuables unguarded on the beach or hidden under towels, we are urging travellers to carefully check their travel insurance policies to ensure they have adequate cover for their needs and belongings.”
Of those who opt to ignore the security of the hotel safe over a quarter of travellers hides their valuables in their suitcase or in a drawer.
