The Titanic Spa is nestled in a valley in the heart of Linthwaite, Huddersfield. A converted textile mill, originally built in 1911, the Titanic is the first eco spa in the UK and combines modern decor and original architecture for a unique wellness experience.
We were kindly invited to sample the Heat and Ice Experience which consisted of full use of the spa facilities, a light lunch on the day of arrival, a two-course dinner and an overnight stay one of the spa’s apartments along with a breakfast hamper before checkout.
Although the building is huge- hence the name- the spa itself takes up about half of the ground floor of the mill. So, despite the potential for many more visitors, the spa was not overwhelmed with lots of people.
We were given an itinerary on arrival which meant we could explore the spa before our treatment and lunch. The spa boasts an outdoor seating area next to the river for drinks, chat, reading the paper or just to sit in silence and take in the surroundings. The terrace, which is surrounded by trees also has jacuzzi for guests who were looking to cool off in between.
We took a dip in the indoor pool which has an adjoining jacuzzi too- ideal for couples who want to take in a few laps or simply sit in the warm bubbles and put the world to rights.
The spa also has a heat experience- which contains several rooms offering different sensory experiences to detox and cleanse- along with a plunge pool and foot spa in the centre. The area is designed to heat and cool the body to encourage relaxation. There is plenty to keep you entertained if you prefer to move around and explore rather than stay in the same place all day- including a gym if you are that way inclined!
After unwinding we each had our treatments. I opted for the Elemis Peaceful Pregnancy Massage and my partner had the Elemis Freestyle Deep Tissue Massage. Both lasted for 55 minutes.
The pregnancy massage was my savour as I was unable to take full advantage of the other areas in the spa like the heat experience.
Unlike other massages where you lie on a bed- there is a large beanbag on the floor and rather than lying on your front- your therapist asks you to lie on one side and then the other while she messages your back and sides of your legs. Then you move onto your back while she massages your arms, neck and the fronts of your legs ensuring there is no contact with your bump if you don’t want there to be.
I was lucky enough to have Sophie Lombie as my therapist. She was very thorough when talking me through what would happen and asked me about any problem areas I had which meant she could focus on them more.
I had particularly stubborn knot in my shoulder which she worked on as well as very swollen feet and sore hands. She applied cooling gel to my ankles and feet which is the best feeling in the world to a pregnant lady! I have been dreaming of a back massage since my bump has grown bigger so thank you, Sophie, for helping me feel more like me again!
My partner has been doing a lot of work in the garden lately and needed some TLC on his back, so his therapist Nicola worked on his lower back and shoulders to make him more comfortable. All the products used during your treatments are available to buy in the shop before you leave so if you can take a souvenir with you!
Lunch was straight after our massages- there was a choice of six meals- 3 salads and 3 more filling options. You are free to order sides and drinks outside of the package- they are just billed to your room. After a Waldorf Salad and Prawn Linguine washed down by two smoothies we felt more energised to take on the rest of the day.
Check in is from 2pm and our bags had already been taken up to our room which was a lovely surprise as the last thing you want to do in a robe and slippers is drag a bag around!
The apartment itself was over two floors with a stocked kitchen, living area, bathroom and balcony on the bottom floor and bedroom on the top. There is potential to stay there for longer than a weekend as it is set up for self-catering. We were lucky enough to be on the top floor, so we had sky lights to let in some extra air and a beautiful view of the leafy green valley.
The apartment itself had contemporary décor which, upon close inspection was in need of a little care and attention- however it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.
Our breakfast basket had a range of cereals, fruit, biscuits and croissants and the fridge had a bottle of milk and two bottles of orange juice all ready for the following morning.
My husband was over the moon as he was able to watch the match in the living room on the big screen TV while I had a little nap upstairs. Best of both worlds!
There were a few hours between the match finishing and our evening meal, so we went back down to the spa and took advantage of the relaxation room which was dimly lit and full of large bean bags and beds to read or just to close your eyes and relax.
The menu had four options per course and we were entitled to two courses as part of our package. Any sides, drinks and desserts were charged to our room. We enjoyed the scallops to start, the pork belly and cod for our mains and lemon meringue pie and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. All of the courses came promptly and were of a very high standard.
The Titanic Spa is like a well-oiled machine- all the staff were efficient and friendly and the whole break ran like clockwork from start to finish.
Given its location- it is very quiet and there are rules in place to ensure that you are not disturbed during your stay. The hotel politely asks that you don’t use your balcony after 10pm or your phone while you are using the facilities, so you are guaranteed a peaceful stay.
The weekend was everything you could want from a spa break- it was relaxing, quiet and flowed effortlessly.
I would recommended to any of our friends who have partners, but it is also ideal for a girly weekend away with friends or mums and sisters if you need a break from the men folk.
Thank you to all the staff who gave us some well needed couple time before our baby arrives!
