The Radisson Blu Edwardian Manchester Hotel is one of Manchester’s most prized buildings that combines the contemporary and the traditional in a luxury setting mere moments away from the heart of the city.
We were kindly invited for their Ultimate Valentine’s Day Experience at the romantic Free Trade Hall, which consisted of an hour’s treatment in the Sienna Spa and dinner in the Opus One Bar and Restaurant.
As we entered the Sienna Spa there was an immediate sense of calm, with mix of aromatherapy scents that carried through the air and gentle music playing in the background- the outside world was left at the door.
We were greeted by Kris who gave us a from to fill in before our treatments and showed us to the changing rooms to get ready into our robes before our treatments. Once we were robed up he took us through to the waiting area.
There was a row of leather loungers that were powered by a control pad to raise and lower your body to your desired position for optimum comfort. Lemon and lime infused water as well as green tea and apples were available to hydrate us before our treatments. The long room boasted ornate gold leaf carvings on the ceiling, unusual paintings that adorned the walls and flickering candles along the floor, casting a warm glow over the room. Reading material was available too, each chair with an individual light to prevent disturbance to the person next to you.
Our treatments were provided by Kathy and Annemarie, who took us into separate rooms for our massages. Please note that you can request a couple’s room for Swedish massages if you wish.
The spa offers a range of massages, including the couple’s massage, Swedish massage, hot stone massage, aromatherapy massage and deep muscle massage, however we felt the Swedish one was best suited to our needs. With a more traditional style of massage it adopts firm pressure to relax and ease tensions in the muscles. It is ideal for those who have not experienced a massage before and helps to soothe aches and pains to feel revived afterwards.
Kathy ran through with me the things highlighted on my form and asked me what affect I wanted from the massage- either energising or relaxing, depending on my mood. I requested energising so I wasn't alert for our meal!
The whole experience was very discreet, as she told me what the treatment would involve and left me for a moment to get undressed and lie underneath the towel on the bed.
She was extremely friendly and engaged in conversation with me throughout, as we found we had a lot of common ground.
The bed was warmed and the room darkened through the whole experience which made it extremely comforting and relaxing.
Although I had the option of half an hour for a massage and half an hour for a facial, I was glad that I opted for the full hours’ worth of massage.
I was left for a few minutes afterwards and Kathy gave me some water and explained that the massage had broken down all the toxins in my body, so keeping hydrated was a way to flush them all out of my system.
I simply could not fault any aspect of the Sienna Spa- both Annemarie and Kathy were professional and considerate of privacy and personal preference so both my partner and I felt totally at ease. Having had bad massages in the past we were able to say afterwards that it was one of the best experiences we have ever had in a spa setting.
I would recommend anyone to book an appointment in the Sienna Spa as part of the Valentine’s Day package or while you stay at the hotel. There is nothing quite like ending a stressful day or week at work with a full body massage to release those knots and prepare you for a relaxing evening meal or time out from the pressures of the 9-5.
