Is going on holiday with friends a good idea?

As soon as you achieve your own independence, the freedom can be overwhelming. The prospect of another of those summer holidays at the beck and call of your parents seems like the last thing on your mind.

The urge to go on holiday with friends can seem like a good idea, but before you jump straight in, consider whether it’s what you really want to do. Holidays are meant to be bags of fun but is it better to spend them with family or friends?

Holidays with friends – a great idea?

Being with friends on holiday can be a laugh. There’s no need to submit to what your parents want to do and you have the freedom of choosing exactly the activities that suit you. There are no restrictions – except when it comes to money!

What can become an issue, however, are arguments. If you go on holiday with friends, it’s likely that you’ll find it difficult to agree on what you want to do.

Remember that you’re not used to spending 24 hours in each other’s company and it can be difficult if personalities clash.

You may think you know someone very well, but in reality you only get to know someone’s habits when you spend a considerable amount of time in their company.

There’s also the issue of money – going on holiday with parents means that they will most likely be prepared to spend their cash on you, whereas if you go with friends the cost is all yours, which can be difficult if you’re a student with little money!

Family holidays can be fun

If you’re a young adult, going on holiday with your family may seem like the antithesis of your independence, but it does have its bonuses.

You can spend quality time together that you wouldn’t usually have, which is great if you’ve spent the academic year away from home.

Another bonus is that, believe it or not, your parents will respect your independence. If you’re in a tourist spot, they will most likely let make friends on your own.

Don’t be afraid of asking them for some time to mix with the other tourists on your own. You’ll be surprised how often the answer will be yes.

The downside is that you will have to compromise. A family holiday is a family holiday, and it can only happen with you on board. Try to put your grievances to one side and enjoy their company.

Remember that on holiday you’ll be with your family or friends 24/7 – there’ll be no escaping if they start to bug you! Think carefully about what you want from your holiday, and if you have any doubts about going with your friends, listen to them.
