Ever since I watched Jonathan Creek as a teenager (and bought myself the dvd box set in last year's January sales) I have always wanted to live in a windmill….
Whilst I know that's probably never going to happen, I have now set my sights on saving up for this whole year and treating myself to a windmill holiday in 2012.… so over the next week or two, I'm going to share with you my favourite windmills on the web.
Bransdale Mill, North Yorkshire
Okay, so it’s not a windmill, but I just couldn't overlook this former water mill near Bransdale. It's stunning, near home and at the head of an unspoiled and hidden valley in the North Yorkshire Moors.
It’s an ideal base from which to get away from it all and to enjoy peace and tranquillity in beautiful countryside. There are many fine walks in the surrounding area, which is rich in wildlife.
The nearest towns are Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley, both 10 miles away, and the North Yorkshire coast can be reached within an hour. The nearest pubs are eight miles away, both of which serve food.
Local attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; Heartbeat Country; National Trust properties at Nunnington, Rievaulx, Bridestones, and the Yorkshire Coast; Pickering and Helmsley Castles.
Bransdale Mill has space for thirteen guests on a self-catering basis, prices are from £130 per night to reserve the entire hostel for exclusive use; smaller groups can be quoted on request. To book call 01723 870423.
