Ever since I watched Jonathan Creek as a teenager (and bought myself the dvd box set in last year's January sales) I have always wanted to live in a windmill….
Whilst I know that's probably never going to happen, I have now set my sights on saving up for this whole year and treating myself to a windmill holiday in 2012.… so over the next week or two, I'm going to share with you my favourite windmills on the web.
Llancayo Windmill - Usk
Llancayo Windmill is a recently renovated mill situated approximately 2 miles north of the former market town of Usk in Monmouthshire. The mill was built in 1813 and destroyed by fire around 1830 and until 2 years ago had stood as a ruin. It has a wealth of gorgeous features, including an open balcony with fabulous views and an enclosed garden with barbecue.
Usk is conveniently located in the centre of Monmouthshire and the town itself has a castle, a rural life museum, the sessions house, a collection of old houses, variety of restaurants, shops, public houses, hotels and other amenities associated with a vibrant rural town. Usk is also famous for its fishing and successes in the Britain in Bloom competitions.
Other attractions in the area include the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Blorenge, Sugar Loaf, and Skirrid Fawr Mountains. Facilities available within a close proximity of Llancayo Windmill include cycling, rope climbing, pony trekking, hang gliding, canal boat hire, fishing and walking as well as having numerous award-winning restaurants nearby.
A three night stay at Llancayo Windmill starts from £1,224 (£102 per person, based on 12 sharing). Visit ruralretreats.co.uk or call 01386 701177
