The Carnival of Screams certainly intrigued us during our stay at Alton Towers as the entrance was partitioned off until the Saturday with no way of seeing into the grounds.
As we entered through the striped curtains that hung like the teeth in a giant clown’s mouth at the entrance, we were greeted by a ring master, who added a little bit of comic relief from the anticipation of what we were about to experience.
The whole area was set up to look like a disused circus, with rotten posters and abandoned acts, which led into a tent with a mime in a box who gives you the option to turn back or go ahead.
Each room was themed, all in the typical bright colours. I found this attraction to play the most tricks on the mind. Two rooms were completely decked out with coloured spots or black and white checks where people were hiding in camouflage against the walls.
For those who don’t like clowns, this one is not for you as you enter a room filled with life sized clowns hanging on strings at each side of you, depending on how long you stay, you will find out which on is real!
The experience also boasts a large spinning tube to disorientate you as you walk through with hands onto the shoulders of the person in front. This was followed by a tunnel that could only be described as like having a bouncy castle at each side of you, so you feel claustrophobic and panicky to get out.
Of all the Halloween themed experiences, I found this to be the most elaborate and creative, playing on different textures and sensations to create a whole new breed of scare experience, whilst sticking to the classic circus routes in its decoration.
