We talk to Lynda Matthews, from LateRooms.com on how Bridget Jones has kicked up a fuss in the website's offices!
When did you first find out Late.Rooms.com was mentioned in the book?
We read a review of the novel in the Guardian, before the book was released and were really excited to see that Tom, is 'obsessed' with LateRooms.com! In the book he references that he 'got a suite at The Chedi in Chiang Mai for only two hundred pounds a night on LateRooms.com'. This is such a gorgeous hotel, so he obviously has great taste!
Why does LateRooms.com want to celebrate the release of the new book by giving a free night away to anyone called Bridget Jones?
We thought it would be interesting to see how many Bridget Joneses there are out there, and being Bridget Jones fans ourselves, we couldn't let it go quietly unnoticed! Giving a night away at one of our boutique hotels seemed like a great way of celebrating the mention.
Why is it important for authors to highlight everyday businesses and places to the reader?
Whenever I read a novel with brand mentions, like hotels, restaurants, or clothes, I always associate those items with the character and story that I am reading. It helps the reader identify, and even share experiences with the protagonist, which in turn can really aid in bringing the story to life. That said, it has to feel natural and fit well with the storyline.
Who came up with the idea to reward any one of the same name with a free stay?
Once we heard that LateRooms.com had been referenced in the book, there was a real buzz around the office, and someone just shouted it out. We all thought it was such a fun idea and wanted to give something back to all of the Bridget Jones’ out there!
Is this something you would consider if any other author featured LateRooms.com in their book?
We’d definitely consider it; however it would really depend on the context of the mention and the type of novel. Bridget Jones is a national treasure, and has captured the nation with her crazy, off the wall adventures, and up and down love life, so the books have a special place in our hearts. It's a unique situation to be in and we’re really proud to have been included.
