A vast and welcoming region, a fascinating land, the Laurentians, north of Montréal, is a world renowned four-season tourist destination. Journeying over plains and valleys, trekking over hills and mountains, there’s a kaleidoscope of landscapes, bursting with beauty.
The region takes its name from the chain of mountains which runs down its northern side, and is part of the great Canadian Shield, which covers most of Quebec north of the St. Lawrence River. Its lively and picturesque villages offer visitors a warm and lasting welcome.
For playing outside, the Laurentian region simply has no equal. In summer, watersports head the field, with more than 9,000 lakes and rivers to choose from. In Autumn, a cycling tour or a long or short-distance hike might do the trick, transporting you at the same time into nature’s very heart, in all its glory.
In winter, some exploring might be nice, this time on snowshoes or cross-country skis, giving us a chance to recall what it was like for the early pioneers as they made their way carefully through snow-clad virgin forests. In spring, it’s time for all things to thaw and that also means some heady experiences for those who enjoy whitewater rafting expeditions, and in particular the Rivière Rouge.
This video shows just how much fun a trip down the rapids can be – hold on to your paddle, your in for a rocky ride!
