Trying to find an 'undiscovered' city that isn't swarming with tourists and is rich in culture can prove a difficult task.
We're looking for something new and exciting.
easyJet recently announced that they would be now flying to Reykjavik, along the coast of Iceland.
With the help of holidaylettings.co.uk we take a look a European cities that you need to visit very soon, before they, like so many before them, become a place swarming with Nikon cameras.
VLORE, ALBANIA
Historic Vlore, Albania’s second city, is located on the country’s stunning southern coast. There’s plenty to do here with beautiful beaches like Zverneci Beach and beach clubs, a great night life, two ancient castles and the UNESCO listed site of Butrint to discover further down the coast, plus some fantastic food markets. And the good news is it’s still quite undiscovered and offers great value for money. BA flies to Tirana four times a week from Gatwick and Vlore is a three hour drive south from Tirana.
BORDEAUX, FRANCE
This beautiful city is generally overseen by Brits who tend to fly into the airport and then head straight out to the Dordogne or France’s south-west. That’s a big mistake because Bordeaux has all the ingredients for the perfect city stay - beautiful buildings (the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site), fantastic eateries, good museums, a very buzzy nightlife and a great climate to boot. And if you have time the seaside resort of Arcachon, a favourite with locals, is well worth a visit. easyJet flies daily to Bordeaux from London Luton and Gatwick.
BOLOGNA, ITALY
Avoid the tourist crowds of Rome and Florence and head to the beautiful medieval Italian city of Bologna instead. There’s plenty to see including red-brick medieval palazzi, towers including the Asinelli tower in the main square and 40 kilometres of arcaded porticoes. Known as ‘la grassa’ (the fat one) it’s a bit of a foodie heaven too and is the home of fresh pasta and mortadella. Try some delicious local specialities in one of the city’s many delis or go on a Bologna gourmet walking tour. easyJet operates daily flights from Gatwick to Bologna.
SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN
Foodies flock to this pretty Basque city thanks to the presence of several Michelin-starred restaurants in the area including Arzak www.arzak.es, run by a father and daughter team, Akelarre and Mugaritz. They also come for the famous pinxtos, the delicious Basque take on tapas that can be sampled in many bars in the city’s atmospheric Old Quarter. easyJet operates flights from Gatwick to Biarritz in July, August and September, then it’s a 40 minute drive to san Sebastian.
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND
Europe’s most northerly capital is cool in more ways than one with its colourful buildings, fantastic restaurants, amazing music scene, cool clubs and also a number of health-giving geo-thermal pools. Plus there’s plenty to visit in the surrounding areas with snow-topped mountains and volcanoes nearby. easyJet operates three flights a week, London Luton to Reykjavik.
