With almost two million Brits set to hire a car for their summer holidays, and nearly 30 per cent of us hiring cars once a year or more, travellers are being urged to check the small print, be on the lookout for expensive hidden extras and remember a few useful tips which could save them hundreds of pounds.
Following on from concerns last year from the Office of Fair Trading about the number of people being duped over car rental insurance sold at the rental desk, new research released today shows the process of renting a car on holiday is confusing for many of us.
Not understanding the small print of the rental car agreement, booking late, not ordering the right size car and purchasing expensive extras from the rental desks are some of the many ways consumers are throwing their money away.
The Office of Fair Trading’s report specifically focused on excess cover as survey results showed that only 29 per cent of hire car drivers know what excess cover is and almost one in five mistakenly believe they can only buy excess insurance from the rental companies.
Excess cover is the additional policy offered to protect you from having to pay the first part of any claim if the car is damaged or stolen, which can be up to £2000.
Many holiday makers are being pressured into purchasing excess cover on collection of their vehicle, something which could add hundreds of pounds to a holiday budget as could a number of other hidden costs revealed today in the “Car Hire Hit List”.
So, if you’re planning to hire a rental car on your holiday, what do you need to be aware to ensure your costs are kept to a minimum?
