Planning a family holiday can be a stressful and expensive time, but new research suggests that mums are the best at doing it on a budget.
It seems that dad will leave it till the last minute, when some prices can incredibly increase and they're more prone to book a two-week getaway abroad.
Whereas, mums confessed to begin planning a family holiday three to five months in advance and manage to save on average £635 compared with dad. This year mums are continuing to keep budgets on track, with 69 per cent planning a UK break.
Jasmine Birtles, a finance expert says: "It looks like mums need to be given full control of the purse strings when it comes to booking holidays. Many families say they can't afford a holiday at all this year, but in fact there are lots of ways of having a break on a budget.
"Train travel can be a cheap way to do it if you do some research and book well in advance. I always recommend the Family and Friends Railcard too, as families can make huge savings with that."
Only one in ten fathers are allowed to take charge of the holiday finances as it seems that they overspend on unnecessary amenitities.
A holiday in the UK seems the perfect antidote for any money troubles and Railcards can help you save a third off adult prices and 60 per cent off child tickets.
Andrew Robertson, head of marketing for the Family and Friends Railcrard, says: "Train companies understand the amount of planning that goes into a UK-based family holiday. Just like going abroad, parents have to consider costs, travel, accommodation adn how to keep the whole family entertained whilst there." As well as great savings on train tickets, their website also offers discounts on hotels, restaurants and a wide range of family activities.
