It’s known worldwide as the city of love, and home to one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks - but the Eiffel Tower might as well be in Italy among 1 in 10 Britons aged under 35, who admit they’re are clueless to the fact that Paris is in France, according to new research.
The geographical mystery doesn’t end there – because 12 per cent of under 35s believe the renowned Italian fashion centre Milan is actually a French city – which goes to show it seems Britain is falling out of love with our continental cousins.
Despite France being one of the most accessible countries in Europe, nearly half of under 35s believed that the destination was too expensive, but it’s not all lost because a quarter of 18-44 year olds questioned said they would consider a holiday to France if they knew more about the country.
The research, carried out by cottages4you, has prompted a campaign to put France back on the map, after it emerged nearly three quarters of 18-24 year olds have never been there.
Cottages4you say booking figures prove the country is still a popular destination and are urging French fans everywhere to share their experiences to encourage more people to enjoy the culture, vineyards and fine food, without breaking the bank.
