These days, there is a cruise holiday to cater for just about any taste, interest or lifestyle as cruise lines seek to fill the cabins in their ever-growing fleets.
Cruise Critic the cruise travel news and reviews site -- lists cruises for naturists and naturalists, foodies and fitness fanatics, eco-warriors and explorers, dancers, cyclists and bridge players, the active and the indolent. Then there are the ultra-special-interest-themed cruises for fans and devotees, including chocolate-lovers, psychics, Mac users and 50’s music enthusiasts.
From this ever-growing list, Cruise Critic has selected a handful of the more unusual theme cruises currently on offer and suggests these five cruises with a twist for 2010:
Spooky Cruising
Try a Paranormal Cruise, sailing the Caribbean October 9-16, 2010, on Norwegian Epic.
On this cruise, a group of paranormal investigators, authors and professionals -- many of whom have appeared or starred in hit television shows like A&E's "Psychic Kids", Discovery Channel's "Sensing Murder", Tru TV's "Haunting Evidence" and SciFi's "Ghost Hunters International" -- will share their experiences about the supernatural.
Blanket Coverage
Take your pick from a choice of three quilting cruises for devotees of this uniquely American pursuit on dates through August 2010. Passengers have the opportunity to travel to the Southern Caribbean, Alaska or Norway's fjords while learning new quilting techniques and sharing experiences with fellow cruisers. A wide variety of classes are held at sea and taught by award-winning, renowned instructors in the world of quilting.
Elvis is Onboard
Fans of The King can gather onboard Carnival Fascination for the fourth annual Elvis Cruise to the Bahamas, November 4-8, 2010. This year's cruise is a part of Graceland's yearlong celebration of Elvis' 75th birthday, and it features a host of Elvis impersonators, including David Allen, Mark Anthony and Victor Trevino. Expect to find plenty of Elvis-themed parties, games, presentations, souvenirs and, of course, music.
Fangs for the Memories
Fans of the Twilight vampire books and films will be sailing on August 8, 2010, for a weeklong cruise to Alaska on Holland America's Oosterdam. Supporting cast members including: Alex Meraz (who played Paul in "Twilight"), Michael Welch (Mike Newton in "New Moon") and Jodelle Ferland (Bree in the forthcoming movie "Eclipse") are joining Twilight devotees onboard, and activities include a fun costume ball, parties, autograph sessions and movie viewings. Pre-cruise festivities on offer include a three-night long exploration (with hotel accommodations) of Seattle -- and Forks -- Washington, the town that the Twilight characters happen to call home.
Budding Authors
Aspiring writers might want to think about taking a creative writing cruise from Italy through the Adriatic and Ionian waters with Swan Hellenic, September 9-23, 2010. The cruise line will be offering writing workshops and interactive sessions on travel and history. In addition, Swan Hellenic will be running a competition for the best piece of fiction or nonfiction writing, and the winner will have their article published in the Swan Hellenic Journal.
