Travel time most important to Brits holidaying in UK
Tuesday 5th April: Travel time is one of the biggest barriers to Brits enjoying a weekend away in the UK according to new data released today. The research, carried out by Northamptonshire Enterprise Ltd (NEL), also showed that traffic jams were one of the biggest frustrations for families travelling to UK holiday destinations.
The poll of just over 1,000 adults revealed that a short journey time is very important when choosing a weekend or short break (35%), with the majority of people preferring to choose a destination within two hours drive of home.
Nearly a third of Brits only want to travel up to 2 hours by car for a weekend break within the UK. Those in London (38%) and the South East (30%) are the least willing to travel for more than 2 hours to reach a weekend break destination.
The research also showed that UK holidaymakers hate having their journey time lengthened by getting stuck in traffic (62%) and road works (57%). Those from the North East find these travel hold-ups the most frustrating (56%) – over twice as many as in Yorkshire and Humber (26%).
Good accommodation (84%) and food (79%) are the biggest priorities for Brits taking a weekend break in the UK. Over half of those asked said how important it was for a weekend break destination to offer something for all the family and 48% said events and activities were important.
Kate Dent, Head of Marketing and Communications at Northamptonshire Enterprise Ltd said: “With consumers now more time-starved than ever, why should people give up precious hours sitting in their cars? According to this new research, Northamptonshire can meet the needs of Brits looking to holiday at home. Easy to get to, packed full of attractions for all the family and home to a growing number of high quality food and accommodation providers, here is a county to while away many a saved hour.”
