YouTube has announced plans to start removing videos that allege widespread voter fraud in the US election.

The video-sharing platform has confirmed that its new approach will apply to all content on the site, including material from President Donald Trump.

The move marks a change of direction for the popular site, which previously just labelled potentially misleading election videos.

But now that a "safe harbour" deadline has been reached, marking a point whereby states need to certify the results of the election, the company has decided to change its policy.

YouTube explained: "Yesterday was the safe harbour deadline for the US Presidential election and enough states have certified their election results to determine a President-elect."

The platform also insisted that the change was in-keeping with its long-standing approach to US elections.

Since the US election in November, President Trump and other members of the Republican party have repeatedly suggested that the vote was "rigged" in support of Joe Biden, the President-elect.

In one Twitter post shortly after the election, the billionaire businessman wrote: "I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT! (sic)"

In another message on the micro-blogging platform, Trump said: "He won because the Election was Rigged. NO VOTE WATCHERS OR OBSERVERS allowed, vote tabulated by a Radical Left privately owned company, Dominion, with a bad reputation & bum equipment that couldn’t even qualify for Texas (which I won by a lot!), the Fake & Silent Media, & more! (sic)"
