The micro-blogging platform has announced it's taken action against a slew of accounts that all posted the same message.

The message read: "YES IM BLACK AND IM VOTING FOR TRUMP. (sic)"

A spokesperson for the site confirmed to CNN that the accounts had broken Twitter's rules, pointing out that it bans users from trying to "artificially amplify or suppress information".

However, at this moment in time, it remains unclear who has been creating the accounts and what they're seeking to achieve.

One of the accounts claims to belong to Gary Ray; he isn't real but the image used on the account is. It belongs to Robert Williams and he wasn't aware of the situation until he was informed of it by CNN.

Reacting to the news of his picture being used by one of the fake accounts, he said: "I was shocked by it. I thought it was a weird attempt to mislead people."

A number of social media platforms - including Twitter and Facebook - have come under increasing scrutiny in recent months, as Americans prepare to vote.
