The site is located near Braintree in Essex, south-east England, and is seen as a major landmark for the country's long-term ambition to move away from fossil fuel-powered cars.

Over the next five years, Gridserve plans to operative more than 100 all-electric car charging stations across the country.

The first site features 36 electric vehicle chargers, each of which can deliver up to 350kW of power.

And according to Gridserve, an average-sized electric vehicle can be charged from 20 to 80 percent for under £10.

The charging stations take their power from renewable energy sources, such as the company's solar farms.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently confirmed that new cars and vans powered wholly by petrol and diesel will not be sold in the country after 2030.

The politician called for a "green industrial revolution" to tackle climate change.

He said: "My 10-point plan will create, support and protect hundreds of thousands of green jobs, whilst making strides towards net zero by 2050.

"Our green industrial revolution will be powered by the wind turbines of Scotland and the North East, propelled by the electric vehicles made in the Midlands and advanced by the latest technologies developed in Wales, so we can look ahead to a more prosperous, greener future."
