The White House confirmed that the site was compromised by cryptocurrency scammers on Tuesday (27.10.20) afternoon.

The About page was changed with a message which read: "the world has had enough of the fake-news spreaded daily by president donald j trump. (sic)"

According to reports it was the work of cryptocurrency fraudsters.

The site also claimed the "trump-gov is involved in the origin of the corona virus (sic)".

However, it was quickly rectified and returned to the original content.

The hackers did not obtain " exposure to sensitive data" as there is no such information stored on the site.

In a statement posted on the site, communications director Tim Murtaugh said: "Earlier this evening, the Trump campaign website was defaced and we are working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the source of the attack.

"There was no exposure to sensitive data because none of it is actually stored on the site. The website has been restored."

The hacking comes just days ahead of the presidential election on November 3.
