The information is generated from newspaper mentions, genealogical record sites and a host of other historical sources. You can even list the most popular surnames by country and highlight how many times the last name has occurred in a country.
The statistics might not be completely reliable, as there do appear to be large gaps of information missing. Nevertheless, the site is useful for anyone who is interested in their surname's demographics, history and concentration all over the world.
