Faux-sheepskin baby blanket PETA will send to royal couple

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are set be given a faux-sheepskin baby blanket by PETA.

Prince William and Duchess Catherine are due to welcome their baby into the world this weekend and the animal rights organisation want to give the tot an animal friendly gift.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) insist the product is better than traditional sheepskin blankets because many sheep have to endure suffering and accidental injuries during the shearing process to get their wool and many are castrated beforehand.

PETA UK Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi said: "Using a cruelty-free baby blanket is a wonderful way to start a lifetime of compassion.

"We hope PETA's gift to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will inspire other parents to set an example of kindness for their families by choosing compassionately created items for their children."

PETA is also going to send Williams and Catherine - previously known as Kate Middleton - a luxury hamper when their baby is born which will contain containing vegan caviar and faux gras - an imitation of the delicacy foie gras.

William's father Prince Charles banned foie gras - made from the enlarged livers of force-fed ducks and geese - from royal menus.
