Spain's King Juan Carlos' abdication could be finalised by June 18.
Politicians met yesterday (06.03.14) to discuss the legal steps necessary to facilitate the Spanish ruler's abdication, and the accession of his son Prince Felipe, and parliament speaker Jesus Pasada predicts plans could be in place in two weeks.
He told BBC News: "I think that by 18 June, everything could be prepared for the proclamation of the king in parliament.
"But that is not my decision to take. We will speak with the royal household and with the government."
Mr. Pasada added that the royal household would decide on a date for Prince Felipe's coronation after this time.
In an emergency cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his ministers drew up a special law needed to facilitate the king's abdication as there is no current law for abdications and accessions.
The legislation is expected to go before parliament for approval on June 11 and June 17.
King Juan Carlos' abdication comes amid controversy regarding a lavish elephant hunting trip in Botswana in 2012, while Spain goes through a recession, and allegations of corruption against his daughter and her husband.
