The SAS soldier at the centre of a new probe into Princess Diana's death has been supported as a trustworthy witness.
The military man - identified only as Soldier N - made claims that the SAS was involved in the late princess' death and "covered it up", but he has since been branded a "loose cannon" with little credibility.
Now a supporter fears the soldier's allegations may fall on deaf ears despite him playing a key role in the trial of fellow SAS member Danny Nightingale, in which he gave crucial evidence against the defendant.
A source told the Daily Express newspaper: "How can this man be a witness of truth one day and a Walter Mitty fantasist the next?
"They will say that Soldier N was just sounding off. That would obviate the need to investigate these claims rigorously. The police will try to bury this, put it in the trash can and say 'no further action required'."
Scotland Yard says it is is assessing information that the SAS may have had an involvement in the death of Princess Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed in 1997 after receiving a letter from the parents of Soldier N's estranged wife.
In the correspondence, it is claimed: "He also told her that it was the SAS who arranged Princess Diana's death and that has been covered up."
