A tie once worn by Princess Diana has been sold for nearly £4000.
The expensive silk accessory was gifted by the late Princess of Wales to a family friend to wear in a job interview in 1995 and it has now fetched £3800 in a sale arranged by Reeman Dansie auction house in Colchester.
The navy blue Escada tie - which is adorned in a gold elephant print pattern - was expected to make between £2000 and £3000 but exceeded the auctioneers' expectations by earning close to £4000 yesterday (18.06.13).
Auctioneer James Grinter told BBC News: "She wore it very publicly."
The princess wore the tie when she went to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, to see her newborn baby nephew Louis, Viscount Althorp, in 1994
Princess Diana's tie is just the latest collection from her wardrobe to be sold following her death in a fatal car crash in Paris in 1997.
Last year, 10 gowns worn by the late royal earned £862,000 in a private auction, with one dress being sold for £240,000 to a man who wanted to surprise his wife with it as a gift.
Auctioneer Kerry Taylor said at the time: "It was bought by a British gentleman who has never bought a dress before but he wanted to buy it as a surprise to cheer up his wife. He only called just in time before the auction, and when I told him he'd been successful, he was delighted.
"His wife loved Princess Diana so when he told her she was over the moon and they had a glass of champagne to celebrate."
