Prince William and Harry will have their mother's wedding dress gifted to them when Harry turns 30 on September 15.

The royal brothers - whose mother Princess Diana died in a car crash in 1997 - are to have the dress returned to them, 17 years after the tragic death, on Harry's 30th birthday.

The gown - which was designed by Elizabeth Emanuel - is one of the most iconic wedding dresses in history and features thousands of pearls, silk layers and a 25-ft train.

Princess Diana wore the gown when she married husband Prince Charles in 1981 and until recently it had been exhibited twice a year at her family's Althorp estate as part of an exhibition titled 'Diana: A Celebration'.

However, when the dress is not on display it is to be "looked after" by Diana's brother Earl Spencer - until Harry's birthday on September 15.

The exquisite gown will not be the only item passed down to the Princes as they will also receive other possessions that featured in the exhibit, including Diana's diamond tiara, family paintings, letters, home movies and other garments.

Meanwhile, Harry is also set to inherit £10million from his mother's estate when he celebrates his landmark birthday later this month.

William, 32, received his equal inheritance when he turned 30 in 2012.
