Britain's Prince William and Duchess Catherine signed a book of condolence dedicated to Nelson Mandela this week.

The young royal couple visited South Africa House in London's Trafalgar Square to sign the commemorative book in honour of the late South African leader, who passed away at the age of 95 last Thursday (05.12.13), reports E! News.

Prince William and Duchess Catherine, both 31, were attending the royal premiere of 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom', a new biopic about Mandela's life, at the time they learned of his death last week.

After leaving the cinema in London's Leicester Square, Prince William said: "It's obviously extremely sad and tragic news. We were just reminded of what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

An official memorial service for Mandela was held in his native Johannesburg on Tuesday (10.12.13) and there is expected to be a royal presence at the late revolutionary's funeral in the small town of Qunu this weekend.

Prince Charles, 65, and his wife Duchess Camilla, 66, are expected to attend in place of Queen Elizabeth, who has been advised not to undertake any long-haul flights.
