Prince William with Duchess Catherine

Prince William's best friend is to be baby George's godfather.

Nightclub boss Guy Pelly - the son of wealthy Kent landowners - appears to have been "informally" asked to take on the prestigious role for the Duke of Cambridge's first child and is delighted.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "He is thrilled to bits about being picked and everyone was congratulating him.

"He's been told informally by the prince. Guy's been a very discreet and good friend to William over the years. Those are qualities he wants to pass to George."

Guy has previously been exposed for bad behaviour after he was caught smoking cannabis at a party where Prince William was present in 2006, and he was with Prince Harry when he hired a Nazi uniform to wear to a private birthday party in 2005.

Duchess Catherine - known as Kate Middleton before she married into the royal family - gave birth to baby George on July 22 with husband William, and the pair are expected to pick five more godparents for the young prince if they plan to keep up with tradition.

Prince Harry and Catherine's sister Pippa Middleton are also thought to be in the forefront of the running.

Other people who make likely candidates include Catherine's school friend Alicia Fox-Pitt and William's estate agent chum Thomas Van Straubenzee.
