The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are reportedly planning to throw a baby shower at Kensington Palace.

Prince William - the second in line to the British throne - and his wife Catherine intend to hold the celebration at the London royal residence, which is where William's late mother Princess Diana lived up to her death in August 1997, on Sunday June 30.

The date has special significance as it is the day before what was Diana's birthday and 30-year-old William - who has a younger brother Prince Harry - wants to make her memory part of his baby's entrance into the world.

A source told Now magazine: "Wills is very excited about it. His view is that his mum will be there with them in spirit as they look forward to the baby's arrival."

William and Catherine - known as Kate Middleton before she married into the British Royal Family - have told guests coming to not buy extravagant gifts and instead just want to focus on having a great day.

The source added: "They just want to have fun and relax before the big day."

The couple also intend to take the baby to meet Diana's brother Earl Spencer and other maternal relatives at the Spencer family home on the Althorp country estate in Northamptonshire and to visit Diana's grave.

The source said: "It'll be incredibly emotional for them."

Catherine's sister Pippa Middleton has helped with the organisation of the baby shower and had wanted to hold it at their parents' home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, but she is happy to host it at Kensington Palace, although there is a possibility another shower could happen at the Middleton house.

Catherine, 31, is due to give birth in just a few weeks in mid-July.
