Queen Elizabeth leaving hospital after visit

Queen Elizabeth took a birthday card to her husband Prince Philip when she visited him in hospital yesterday evening (10.06.13).

The British monarch went to see her spouse at London clinic where he is recovering from exploratory operation he underwent on Friday (07.06.13).

As she entered the building shortly before 7:00pm, the queen was seen clutching a back handbag and a card addressed to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh for Philip, who turned 92 yesterday. She stayed for around 30 minutes before leaving.

The queen wasn't the duke's only visitor.

Earlier in the day his son Prince Edward went to see his father to check on how he is doing.

Edward, the Earl of Wessex, arrived at the hospital at approximately 3:30pm and stayed for just 20 minutes before heading off in a Land Rover Discovery. As he left he told gathered reporters and photographers his father was doing "well".

Philip was admitted last Thursday (06.06.13) ahead of his scheduled laparotomy, which was carried out under general anaesthetic. It is not known why he had the operation - which was scheduled after a routine health check-up discovered something unusual - but the results are due back later this week.

He is expected to remain in hospital for two weeks and then will spend two months at Buckingham Palace recuperating.

A statement released by the Palace said: "His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh is progressing according to plans at this early stage. He is comfortable and in good spirits.

"He will remain in hospital for up to two weeks, and it is expected he will then be taking a period of convalescence of approximately two months."

Philip has suffered from a number of health problems over the past few years, including a bladder infection which required hospital treatment last August. He was also taken unwell following the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant which took place along the River Thames in London on June 3, 2012.
