A soldier reportedly lost the fingers on one of his hands during a gun salute for Denmark's Prince Henrik on his 79th birthday on Tuesday (11.06.13).
The 26-year-old soldier suffered the injury after his hand was hit by parts of a gunpowder charge during the ceremonial event at Kronborg Castle in Helsingor for Henrik - the husband of the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II.
Danish newspaper Helsingor Dagblad reported the injury occurred when the military man moved to the front of an antique cannon used in the salute which had failed to fire. As he tried to reload it the initial charge went off.
As well as losing his fingers, the as-yet unnamed soldier was thrown over the castle wall - where the firearm had been positioned - and fell four metres to the ground.
He received immediate medical assistance from rescue workers who were present.
According to the BT newspaper the soldier's injury and fall was caused by a blank round in the cannon as no cannon balls were used for the gun salute.
